1987: The Harmonic Convergence

I am currently in the process of writing my Dutch astrology newsletter, and the theme of the Harmonic Convergence came to mind (again). This was a global event which took place under a grand trine in the fire signs (see chart below). This text comes from Wikipedia: The Harmonic Convergence was the world’s first synchronized global peace meditation, coinciding with an exceptional alignment of Solar System planets on August 16–17, 1987. The event was organized by spouses José Argüelles and Lloydine Burris Argüelles, via the Planet Art Network (PAN), a peace movement they founded in 1983. Timing of the Harmonic Convergence allegedly marked a significant celestial alignment of the Sun, Moon, and six planets as “part of the grand trine.” The event was global (even though there was no internet at the time), the event being advertised through the normal media, word of mouth, television, etc. etc.

The idea of the ‘Harmonic Convergence’ drew heavily on the Mayan Calendar too, but the central point I am making here, is that astrology was promoting the idea of a new age of universal peace. People were told that this was a unique event, that it would lead to a “major energy shift”, signify a turning point in the Earth’s collective karma and dharma. It would usher in a new global perspective, and humankind would turn away from conflict towards co-operation. American actress Shirley McClaine, called it ‘a window of light’.

You might be wondering why I am saying this. Well, once again these past few months has seen the latest astrological hype this time surrounding the so-called Barbault Basket, which refers to the unique alignment of the outer planets in 5 degrees of their respective signs, (Jupiter in Leo, Uranus in Gemini, Neptune in Aries, Pluto in Aquarius, which included the Full Moon in 7 degrees Aquarius on July 29th). I think such hypes do astrology a disservice: they create unrealistic expectations and presume gifts from the gods that may never be given. Certainly if you are a fire or air sign or have significant planets in these elements, you might have been expecting special cosmic gifts. Personally, I have received questions from two people, one is an Aries, the other is a Leo, asking me why they are actually having a very tough time right now. They had imagined quite different scenarios.

On a recent FB post by a well known astrologer, I voiced my concern. My comment said, astrology nowadays just moves from hype to hype. We are done with the Saturn/Neptune conjunction, so we move forward to the next major (or minor) astrological event. Maybe it is an age thing: but I start to find it tiring. Anyway, in my comment I mentioned the Harmonic Convergence as starting point. The astrologer, Steven Forrest made a great comment in reply, saying: ‘A tendency toward episodic hysteria seems now to be part of astrology’s shadow. Every year or so, we are either on the brink of The Apocalypse or a Golden Age.’ That seems to encapsulate it perfectly.

I am not expecting anything to change soon, but anyway, here is the horoscope of the harmonic convergence. What do you think? Did it deliver the goods?
